Bright lady on the hill
11'' X 14''
colored pencil, oil pastel, acrylic paint and graphite

sold; prints available
The idea of the drawing has to do with the past and the now. ie the lady is standing in her own present experience.....bright and happy. and the trees represent "the past" that really isnt the past at all. all along our journey we plant seeds and learn major principles to use as we go and those seeds we plant and principles we learn don't die. They become the living growing plants of our own landscape....ie the row of trees is her very own living garden. the characters in the trees represent those we love who have been a part of our journey and perhaps have gone on - either passed away or just moved out of our life experience - yet they too are still giving to us still ever present and very much alive. and then the characters running along the path below are the many fellow travelers who move along with us in our life - they are running along beside an orchard full of fruit....... she has taken time to stand on a hill above the path so she can just enjoy the present moment and also survey and appreciate the garden that is her experience. the red dog for me represents companionship and that kind of unconditional love that is the highest form of love in our lives as important, the little dog represents playfulness and spontaneity.
Martha and Mary

For many the story of Martha and Mary is simple. Mary is the one of Jesus' friends who has taken the higher road of sitting in contemplation and communion at the feet of the Master. Martha is always about the outer matters at hand. Cooking, and seeing that the household is running. that hands are washed, floors swept, guests served and the Master freed to teach. I see the story as symbolic of the whole person. Martha has already attained a life of communion and so is going about day to day life. She knows the life of dimension - where you don't necessarily have to sit at the feet of the Master. But you may indeed do that as Mary is. The two women reflect the life of poise and joy - the life of practicality and deep awareness.(photo courtesy of Adrian Pedron / Peoria, Arizona)

What is it like to sit in relaxed acceptance and enjoyment of the moment? This drawing is about the refreshment of not needing to be anywhere at all other than where I am. Out the window is a path. There is a sun or a setting moon in the sky. The high remote mountains in the distance. The woman is enjoying tea, the flowers and the view.
There is a red cloak hung up on the side next to an interior door which symbolizes her divine purpose perhaps. She doesn't need it now as she sits in a place of poised reflection, at ease and yet in a space of vitality.(photo courtesy of Adrian Pedron / Peoria, Arizona)

The orchard in Jewish mysticism symbolizes awareness or full realization. The apple tree/orchard can stand for the Divine Father but also the Divine Feminine. In this drawing a woman is sitting under an apple tree holding a basket of apples. She is someone who is "full," enjoying life, the fruits of the spirit, and the beauty of the day to day experience.

The process
Recently a friend called to request an original drawing for an acquaintance with whom she had a special bond. My friend told me a little about this person. I took the information to heart and just let some ideas flow for a few days. The woman grew up in a Jewish household so I started with the idea of an apple tree. In Jewish mysticism the apple orchard has special significance symbolizing both the divine Creator and the divine Feminine. So I started with an apple tree and a woman sitting underneath with a basket of apples.
Later on, I got another, completely different, idea for this person. So I drew that also. The second image was a woman sitting at a table just relaxing and drinking tea, looking out of a window. Nothing more needed, just to be.
I enjoyed presenting both drawings, first to my friend who ordered the art, and then to her special friend. Both women were able to look at the two pieces and decide which would be "the" one. And as the artist, I had the fun of looking in on the process.
